A lawyer in the Warri branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr Bernard Oyabevwe, was a June 5, 2018, allegedly beaten to a pulp by policemen attached to a police station in the ‘A’ Division of the Delta State Police Command in Warri for defending his client. The lawyer was said to have visited the division to defend his client who was arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Southern City News learnt on Sunday that Oyabevwe had visited the police station attached to the division, which is directly adjacent the state magistrate court, when the incident happened, leaving the victim brutalised with his eyes injured. It was learnt that trouble started when Oyabevwe found out that his client and his wife had been forcefully arrested by the EFCC officials from Magistrate Court II and taken to the division. The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has banned the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force from conducting stop and search operations on roads except when necessary. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some group of Nigerians recently on social media, called for the scrapping of SARS over alleged harassment of innocent Nigerians, using the #EndSARS. Following the allegation, the Inspector- General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, promised to restructure and reposition the unit for effective service delivery. Idris also warned members of the group against acting as body-guards, delving into land matters and debt collection that were considered civil. He further warned that members of the unit must only embark on operations with the permission of the commissioner of police in charge of SARS in the police commands.

A policeman guarding a hotel in the Ijegun, Ikotun area of Lagos State has reportedly shot dead a 28-year-old graduate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Jude Okoronta. The policeman, who is guarding the Hotel killed the graduate around 11 pm on Wednesday, according to the Sebkeyzblog. The newspaper reports that the victim was waiting for a commercial motorcycle to take him home in front of the hotel when the police man gunned him down. The brother of the deceased, Paul Okoronta, was quoted by the newspaper as saying, that Jude was a customer at the hotel, adding that he usually went there to catch fun. He explained that he had gone out of the hotel and was heading home when fight broke out in the hotel. He said, “He had been going to the hotel for months now; he was one of their customers Because we usually have power problems, we also sometimes go there to charge our phones and relax.
